When an important event or holiday is just around the corner, getting your period can be stressful and an untimely inconvenience.

Women can delay the onset of their period for up to 17 days by using the popular medication, Norethisterone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Period Delay

Periods can be delayed by taking Norethisterone tablets three days before the expected start date of your next menstrual cycle.

Norethisterone tablets contain norethisterone, a synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone which thickens the uterine lining, delaying it from shedding. This mechanism subsequently helps delay menstruation.

Norethisterone is a clinically proven period delay treatment which should be taken after consulting a pharmacist or doctor. For more information, refer to our comprehensive guide explaining the Safest Methods to Delay Your Period.

The frequency with which an individual can safely delay menstruation depends on various factors including the individual’s medical history, age, lifestyle, and whether they are taking other treatments such as daily contraceptives.

While it may be safe to occasionally delay a period, doing so frequently can result in hormonal imbalances and increase the risk of potentially dangerous health outcomes such as the formation of blood clots.

We recommend consulting your doctor or GP to determine how frequently you can delay periods safely.

You can delay your period for up to 17 days by taking Norethisterone tablets three times a day. Norethisterone tablets must be taken 3 days before the period is due to start to delay menstruation.

Period delay tablets should not be taken for longer than the duration specified in the patient information leaflet or as advised by a pharmacist, GP or doctor. In the case of Norethisterone, we do not recommend taking it for more than 17 days at a time.

Period delay tablets should not be used as a form of contraception. If you wish to prevent pregnancy, consult a pharmacist or doctor about taking contraceptive pills, emergency contraceptive pills (such as the morning after pill) or using barrier contraceptives such as condoms.

Period delay tablets are safe if taken according to the instructions in the patient information leaflet and as advised by a medical professional.

It is important to note that women with certain underlying health conditions may not be eligible to take period delay tablets such as Norethisterone due to the effects of this treatment on the body. Always consult a pharmacist or doctor before taking period delay tablets.

The side effects of period delay tablets such as Norethisterone are infrequent and do not affect a majority of women. Some women may experience the following:

  • Spotting
  • Stomach ache
  • Lower libido
  • Irregular bleeding

If you notice severe or persistent side effects, inform a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

Norethisterone 5 mg is one of the most effective period delay treatments. Norethisterone tablets contain the active ingredient norethisterone which mimics the role of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone, thickening and subsequently delaying the shedding of the uterine lining which results in menstruation being postponed for up to 17 days.
