Product Information
Adapalene (0.1%) / Benzoyl Peroxide (2.5%) gel is a topical medication used to treat and prevent acne vulgaris, a common dermatological condition characterised by blocked pores, blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots, and pustules.
This treatment contains two active ingredients: adapalene and benzoyl Peroxide. Together, both active ingredients deliver a dual-action treatment that targets bacterial growth, exfoliates skin and removes dead skin and sebum to treat and prevent mild to moderate acne.
How does the treatment work?
Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid that helps regulate skin cell turnover by promoting the shedding of dead cells and replacing them with new ones to prevent pores from becoming clogged. It also reduces local inflammation, contributing to a clearer complexion over time.
Benzoyl Peroxide complements this action through its antibacterial and exfoliating effects. It eliminates acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) and helps remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.
How effective is the treatment?
The combination of these two active ingredients has been shown in clinical studies to be highly effective in treating and preventing mild to moderate acne. For instance, in a recent trial, topical application of this medication produced visibly noticeable results by the third week of treatment.
How do I use Adapalene / Benzoyl Peroxide?
The gel should be applied gently to the area affected by acne, once a day in the evening. Before application, ensure both the skin and hands are clean and dry.
Adapalene / Benzoyl Peroxide gel should be applied in a thin layer. Avoid applying the gel near the eyes and mouth. Using too much of the medication during the application will not increase the effectiveness of the treatment, but rather increase the risks of experiencing side effects.
It is also worth noting that benzoyl Peroxide has bleaching properties. Therefore, any skin contact with hair and delicate fabrics should be avoided after application. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the product to the face.
How long does it take to work?
The gel starts acting on the skin from the first application, although visible results usually appear between 1 and 4 weeks. Continued use is recommended for sustained improvement.
Your skin might initially experience mild irritation because of a process known as "purging", where underlying blockages are brought to the surface, but this typically resolves after a few weeks of treatment.
What’s the difference between Adapalene / Benzoyl Peroxide and Epiduo?
Both treatments contain the same active ingredients and are equally effective in treating and preventing mild to moderate acne.
However, Adapalene / Benzoyl Peroxide gel is sold as a generic medication and is therefore cheaper, while Epiduo is the original branded version and is more expensive.
